SKIN TIGHTENING

Skin Tightening Calgary

When it comes to skin tightening on the body, there are many options to choose from in Calgary ranging from at home products to treatments in clinics/medispas to operating rooms.  Here are some options to consider:

Least Effective

Creams and lotions offer temporary, short-term improvements, if any, due to the plumping effect some ingredients may have.  According to Dermatologists, there are no products that will lift sagging skin, for example, on the arms.  A cream or lotion containing retinols can help your body produce some collagen, and assist in tightening skin with continued use.

Moderately Effective

Non-invasive (non-surgical) skin tightening machines and treatments are offered in many clinics and medispas, including dermatologists, using a variety of machines operated by trained technicians.  In general, the more advanced–and expensive—machines provide more effective treatment results at higher price points.

Radiofrequency (RF) Skin Tightening

  • recommended to tighten skin on the face, abdomen, thighs, arms and chin, depending on the type of RF machine used
  • skin is heated in both epidermis (upper) and dermis (lower) levels of the skin
  • RF heat stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, to firm and tighten the skin
  • Slight results one week after first treatment, while a series of treatments may be needed for significant skin tightening effects; results last up to 6 months, depending on the type of RF machine used
  • typically safe for all skin types
  • minimal discomfort and no down time

Ultrasound Skin Tightening

  • work wells for the face, chin, neck, and chest areas
  • may be slightly uncomfortable for some and quite painful for others
  • may require painkillers or topical numbing agents
  • in-office procedure with little to no downtime

Intense Pulsed Light and Radiofrequency Combination

  • a hybrid option that treats deep layers of skin
  • gradual results
  • no discomfort or downtime
  • can cause post-inflammatory pigmentation in people with darker skin tones

Ultrasound and Radiofrequency Combination

  • another hybrid option combines ultrasound and radiofrequency
  • recommended to tighten skin on the face, abdomen, thighs, arms, upper & lower back, buttocks, and chin, depending on the type of RF machine used
  • improvements slightly noticeable after first treatment; significant results after 3 months

Non-Ablative Laser

  • can provide significant skin tightening results
  • lasers send heat deep into the skin without wounding the top layer of skin
  • used to tighten skin all over the body and can be especially helpful for tightening loose skin on the belly and upper arms
  • requires a few days of recovery, with full results after 2-6 months
  • may need 3 to 5 treatments to get results, lasting between 3-5 years

Most Effective

Ablative Laser

  • Most effective procedure for tightening loose skin
  • also known as laser resurfacing, removes the epidermis (upper) layer of skin
  • damages the collagen, prompting the skin to regenerate and tighten
  • Most effective procedure for tightening loose skin
  • Requires downtime of up to 4 weeks
  • Full results in 4-6 months, lasting up to 8 years (depending on the type of laser used)
  • Those with darker skin or certain skin conditions may not be good candidates

Plastic Surgery

  • surgical procedure removing loose skin that remains after significant weight loss, including post-pregnancy
  • recommended for skin that is very loose or saggy, when the treatments described above are not able to produce a satisfactory tightening effect
  • most invasive of all procedures/treatments, providing permanent results
